Peter McQueen on culture in NDG: Libraries and the Empress

Image: Wikipedia

"The Empress Cultural Centre project is stalled, due to the Quebec government’s Ministry of Cultural Affairs refusing to fund it (the ministry says the project does not with their subsidy programs). That stretch of Sherbrooke near Girouard, which is where beautiful Empress is located, remains vulnerable, from the abusive landlord evicting tenants from 2290 Girouard last fall (by removing the heating, very classy!) to the unstable businesses further west. I Am certain the entire Sherbrooke village community would like to see progress on the Empress dossier to help liven up the area. With a view helping to raise the profile of this project, my team and I will help organize two cultural festivals: the beloved Country en Ville in Girouard Park (for more information, see the article on last year’s event: http://www.thelinknewspaper.ca/articles/1380), and possibly a festival of  short films in front of the Empress. Keep your eyes open for these two events.

Still on the cultural front, there are rumours that if the cultural centre is built in the new library slated for Benny and Monkland, the Maison de la Culture NDG might be moved into it, along with its art gallery and performance space.

And lastly, the Fraser Hickson library project at Trinity Memorial church (Sherbrooke and Marlowe) was deemed too expensive by the diocese, so they are back to square one in their search for a home in NDG.  I will therefore be calling for a major consultation in NDG on the future of all our libraries and cultural facilities."
