After 4 years of listening, Projet Montréal launches its citizen program on the Plateau
Friday September 11, 2009
Luc Ferrandez, mayoral candidate for the Plateau of Mont-Royal, revealed Projet Montréal’s electoral platform for the Plateau this morning, accompanied by his team of candidates. In all, over 150 proposals will be submitted so that this platform, the most complete, thorough and progressive ever presented to a town hall, can make the Plateau of Mont-Royal a greener, more welcoming neighbourhood for families. Thanks to four years of being ever engaged and present in the field, a rare fact among municipal opposition parties, Projet Montréal has been able to refine and expand its vision of what an environmental and social revolution can look like at a local scale, and is well placed to present a program that is in line with the citizens of the borough’s needs and wishes.
A new space for the metro: citizens first
Projet Montréal is working to reshape the space around the Mont-Royal metro in order to not only make it the civic and symbolic heart of the neighbourhood, but to also transform it into one of the city’s most welcoming and enjoyable meeting points. “The space around the metro will be widened to reduce traffic along Mont-Royal Avenue. It will be the starting point for a number of ambitious project in the Plateau,” declared Mr. Ferrandez. Projet Montréal is already engaged in building a tramline along the famous thoroughfare, as well as studying different ways of turning the street into pedestrian walkway with local actors. In addition, beginning with the first Projet Montréal administration, two more public spaces will be realized following the same model, and this despite a precarious financial situation. New York provides a recent example showing that remarkable strides can be made simply by taking the first step of breaking ground.
Putting an end to Tremblay-Labrecque’s paralysis
With the current Michel Labrecque administration, citizens have had to arm themselves with patience regarding new projects, only to be disappointed in the end when they fail to meet their original expectations. “Michel Labrecque and Michel Prescott have been promising us for four years regulation concerning noise. In four weeks, we will vote and apply Outremont’s excellent regulation. With Projet Montréal, we can do it.” “Projects as simple as the installation of a stop sign on Bernard, a demand which is ten years old, have waited until the electoral season was looming to get completed this past spring. If Michel Labrecque’s team stays in place, citizens will once again have to wait for Union Montréal election reflexes for things to get going”, added M. Ferrandez.
A debt of 4,116,000$, that’s team Labrecque’s bottom line
The primary challenge that awaits Projet Montréal’s new administration will be to repair the Plateau’s finances in order to avoid bankruptcy. “The catastrophic management of financial resources by Labrecque’s team clearly shows that Union Montréal in no way deserves a new mandate November 1st.” Despite a difficult financial situation, Luc Ferrandez still believes that many projects can still move forward. “I’ve studied over many years urban refurbishment projects that we were able to start the morning after the election and that cost practically nothing. Putting the quality of life of our citizens first is not a privilege of the rich,” concluded Mr. Ferrandez.
