Bryce Durafourt, Projet Montréal's candidate or the November 21st by-election in Saint-Laurent, introduces himself
Wednesday October 20, 2010
Hi, my name is Bryce Durafourt, and I’m thrilled to be Projet Montréal’s candidate in the November 21st by-election in Saint-Laurent! I am presently completing a Master’s degree in Neuroscience at McGill University, where I have also been accepted into medical school. I received my Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology, also from McGill, in 2009.
Why politics, you may ask? Growing up, I was always interested in knowing what was going on locally and in the world around me. Before I was even 18 years old, I had decided I wanted to use my interest to help make a difference in the local community. I realized that complaining about problems wouldn’t do any good; only by taking action can we help bring about needed improvements! As a result, I decided to run for Montréal city councillor in Saint-Laurent in the 2005 municipal elections, and while I was not elected, the experience got me hooked. I went on to run for English Montréal School Board commissioner in 2007, and ran a larger campaign for city councillor in 2009. With each campaign, I was fortunate to continue to meet residents, and learn about their likes as well as garner suggestions for improvement within the city.
I share Projet Montréal’s goals of improving public transit, protecting the environment, investing in social housing, and increasing citizen participation in democracy, all while balancing the budget. I hope to bring new ideas to the Saint-Laurent council, and would work hard to improve the quality of life of my fellow residents. I have a number of ideas concerning optimizing local services, through better coordination to cut costs and make the processes more efficient. For example, I would push for coordinating snow removal schedules with the existing parking restrictions instead of wasting resources to introduce temporary parking restrictions after each snowfall.
Having grown up in Saint-Laurent, I have come to know the community well. I learned to swim at Chamberland park, and took tennis lessons at both Gohier and Alexis-Nihon parks. During the summer, I have worked for many years as a sailing instructor, and now volunteer with the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary. I enjoy competitive curling during the winter months.
I look forward to serving my fellow residents of the Côte-de-Liesse district, where I plan to be attentive to the needs and concerns brought forward. I want residents to know how to contact their elected officials in order to make suggestions, and turn complaints into concrete plans of action and solutions!
Hoping to be able to count on your support on November 21st,
Bryce Durafourt

Get involved in your borough
Projet Montréal encourages citizens' participation at the municipal level, and the structure of the party reflects this mind-set. Indeed, more than just having a board of directors for the party, Projet Montréal has a decision-making body located in each borough. This group is called the Local Borough Association, recognized by the acronym ALA (Association locale d'arrondissement). The ALA's activities are coordinated by the local committee; its members are elected by the members of the borough during the General Assembly.
